Tuesday, 9 September 2008 - Lamb’s Farm President Dee Cavenaugh called the meeting to order at 12:05 and led us in the Pledge to the Flag in senate candidate Bill Gentes’ lapel pin. There were 47 members present. The minutes of the 12 August meeting were approved as printed. The financial report was deferred due to the absence of Treasurer Ray Reidel. After lunch, members were encouraged to sign up for the newsletter mailing party next Tuesday. The four Lake County TRS pre-retirement meetings were announced, and the one additional volunteer needed to staff them was solicited: Oct 21 - CLC - Abbott & Nizzi Oct 28 - NCHS - Houle & Anderson Nov 13 - EMS, HP - Stewart & Lindahl Nov 19 - VHHS - Benton & C Dier TRS elected annuitant Bob Lyons had a handout and update. He noted that teachers were loved when we were poor! The average pension is now over $41,000. 82,000 retied teachers, 8,000 survivors, and 1,000 disabled teachers currently receive benefits. Active teachers pay 9.4% into the system. TRS investments made 19.6% last year. Our health insurance is an unprotected benefit. Legislative chair Jim Prunty introduced senate candidates Bill Gentes (D-26), Dan Duffy (R-26), and Keith Gray (R-30) as well as sitting senator Michael Bond (D-31). All made brief statements. Dee Cavenaugh welcomed new attendees Rita and John Shubitz. Teta Minuzzo encouraged participation in a fundraiser walk for literacy. Program Chair John Anderson announced the October program: Bob Miler with “music, magic, comedy, and audience participation.” Dee thanked Jim Prunty for filling in for Darwin Heide. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:48. Marti Swanson conducted the scholarship drawing.
