General Meeting of the Lake County Retired Teachers Association
Tuesday, 10 November 2009 - Lamb’s Farm


Vice President Jim Benton called the meeting to order at 11:58 and led us in the Pledge. There were 53 members present, all of whom sang “Happy Birthday” to Jim.

The minutes of the 13 October 2009 meeting were approved as printed.

Treasurer Ray Reidel presented his report, which showed the following balances:

Operations Fund - $2,456.44
Life Fund - $41,804.
Legislative - $1,421.24
Foundation - $100.94
Killian Scholarship - $1,213.13
LCRTA Scholarship Fund - $5,340.50
The report was filed for audit.

After lunch, Program Chair John Anderson introduced Jim Carr. who spoke of his experiences as a docent on Amtrak’s “Empire Builder,” which travels 2,200 miles from Chicago to Seattle. The “Trails and Rails” program is jointly sponsored by Amtrak and the National Park Service. Jim, who pointed out landmarks to passengers on the Chicago to Winona segment of the journey, shared how to become involved and what is covered in training docents.

Area II Representative Marti Swanson informed members that Jim Benton was our Unit Honoree at the IRTA Convention; this designation was part of our successful lobbying effort in behalf of maintaining Jim’s Information Services Committee. She also informed members that Carol Sente has replaced Kathy Ryg as 59th House District Representative. Carol is seeking constituents to serve on her citizen advisory committees. Kathy is the new President of Voices for Illinois Children, a child advocacy group.

Ray Reidel conducted the scholarship drawing. Dorothy Aikus was the winner of $34.50.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:27.
