General Meeting of the Lake County Retired Teachers Association
Tuesday, 8 April 2008 - Lamb’s Farm


President Dee Cavenaugh called the meeting to order at 12:00 and led us in the Pledge. There were 50 members present.

The minutes of the 11 March 208 meeting were approved as printed.

Connie Reidel presented the Treasurer’s report for husband Ray. The following balances were reported:

Operations Fund - $2212.19
Life Fund - $43,896.
Legislative - $1,489.84
Killian Scholarship - $2,213.13
LCRTA Scholarship - $5,191.58
The report was filed for audit.

President Cavenaugh greeted two new members, Cheryl Collins and Lynda Hofeldt.

Program chair John Anderson introduced the speaker, Leslie Claiborn from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Lake County. After receiving 40 hours of training over six weeks, Advocates are appointed by a juvenile court judge to represent the best interests of a single child, generally one currently in foster care.

Jim Benton commented on the nomination forms for our three LCRTA awards; his committee--Ellie Moss, Marge Sikes, Dave Dier, Jeanne Houle, and himself--will select the winners after our meeting today,The spring newsletter will be mailed next Tuesday. IRTA pins and assorted handouts were available.

Marti Swanson gave a preview of and urged members to sign up for the Area II Spring Conference on April 28 in Crystal Lake. IRTA President Steve Polep, State Representative Lou Lang, TRS Elected Annuitant Bob Lyons, and IRTA Executive Director Jim Bachman (on VoterVoice) will speak. Break-out sessions will be on Information Services with our own Jim Benton (publicity, website, database, member benefits, etc), Membership with IRTA recruiter Rick Hutchinson, and the endorsement process with state legislative committee members from our Area.

Legislative Chair Darwin Heide spoke on the Constitutional Convention issue, SB2296 (TRIP funding), SB2448 (ad hoc increase), the new tax swap bill, and HB473 (another threatened sweep from our medical insurance escrow). He urged members to use VoterVoice to contract their legislators on these issues.

IRTA President Steve Polep also urged members to use VoterVoice and noted that the website would be “new and improved” very soon. He also reported that MCRTA was sponsoring a one week Mediterranean cruise in November at a reasonable rate.

The May 13 LCRTA meeting will be at Mill Creek in Waukegan and will feature “Loose Change and Friends,” a group presenting blue grass and early American music.

Connie Reidel conducted the scholarship drawing. Ellie Moss was the winner of $25, which she donated back to the scholarship fund.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:30.
